The Adventures of Hermana Patten: Part 11

 Hola amigos !!

Yesterday night, we got transfer news. Basically, that means that I found out that I will be staying in Elko for at least the next six weeks! Yay! We also found out we're getting a third companion (another newbie) so that will be exciting as well. We'll get to meet her Wednesday!
Other exciting stuff that happened this week:
- Last Monday, we had to call the fire department. We had pulled up to the church to decorate for a wedding and the alarm was going off! Fire trucks came and everything but nothing was wrong, I guess it was just going off for fun.
- We also went on our hike which was it's own little adventure. It was super pretty up the canyon, but the Elders told us to take the wrong trail (we were headed up the horse trail for some reason, don't ask me why) and my companion, who has asthma, ended up passing out. It was so scary and I thought I was going to have to use some of my (no longer) certified lifeguard skills, but don't worry, she's okay. The Elders gave her a blessing and we walked back to the car very very slowly and it all worked out. I am so so grateful for the power of the priesthood!!
- We went to the wedding! It was so cute and happy and they want to get married in the temple eventually so the officiator kept making reference to how the next wedding is going to be so much better and ahhh I loved it!!
- We did exchanges again this week which was also so fun! We met this lady who was CONVINCED she had seen a yeti. Her house was a little loco... there were yeti and gorilla statues everywhere (and when I say statues... I mean lifesize, they were huge!) She was wearing a bigfoot shirt and there were signs all over too! She told us the story of seeing the yeti and I had to keep myself from laughing but she was a really cool lady and it was so awesome to meet her.
- Saturday, we walked into our apartment and it straight up just smelled like methane/propane gas. Bad sign. Especially since I usually have about 0% sense of smell. I also just had a mega bad feeling about it (thank you Holy Ghost) so we told our members and went to sleep at the other sisters apartment. They got everything all figured out (as it turns out, yes, the air was filled with gas and if we had stayed there... bad things would have happened. Like. Really bad.) Anyways, we're back in our apartament now but that was a little bit of a scare.
- Yesterday in Sacrament meeting I was tasked with translating a talk. Our branch isn't very big so there aren't many Spanish speakers to give talks, so some people from the English wards came and spoke in English and I translated it to Spanish. It was terrifying and I thought I was going to die BUT as you can see I survived! Everything ended up working out great :)
Anyways, I guess I'll end with a little bit of spiritual thought. If you have the chance this week, I would encourage you to go read the talk "Come What May, and Love It" by Joseph B. Wirthlin. It's soooooo good!
Here's a little tidbit that I really liked (but seriously, go read the whole thing): "Adversity, if handled correctly, can be a blessing in our lives. We can learn to love it. As we look for humor, seek for the eternal perspective, understand the principle of compensation, and draw near to our Heavenly Father, we can endure hardship and trial."
I love throughout the whole talk how he speaks about facing trials with a positive attitude. Yes, life is hard. Yes, trials are going to come. But yes, it is going to be so so much easier if we love everything that comes at us, if we take time to savor the little things, if we let ourselves laugh. We aren't here to be sad, because men are that they might have joy.... so do it! Be happy and love God and everything will work out in the end.
I love you all so so much and more importantly, God loves you all so so much! I hope you have the most fantastic week ever (and good luck with classes and school for those of you who are starting soon, you got this!)
Paz fuera,
Hermana Patten
